Solid first steps

Why the “Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker” tutorial I played rubbed me the wrong way, plus a short list of games with compelling ways of teaching gamers how to play them. This post is an expanded version of the column that ran in Friday’s paper.… Read More »

Just call it ‘Gears of Warcraft’

Bethesda Softworks took the wraps off of its newest third-party title. No, not “Fallout: New Vegas,” but a game from inXile Entertainment called “Hunted: The Demon’s Forge.” The two-player co-operative dungeon crawler uses Epic’s Unreal 3 game engine and looks so much like a fantasy version of “Gears of War” that I’m content to call it “Gears of Warcraft.”… Read More »

Getting the most out of your gift cards

Soon, it’ll be Christmas morning, or less than a week after the end of Hanukkah, and you’ll have a stack of gift cards. If you own a Wii, you’ve probably noticed that it’s been a slow year since the release of “Wii Fit” in May. “Wii Music,” a product of uber-designer Shigeru Miyamoto, aims to remind us that Nintendo still has it. If you’re a die-hard fan of the fake-instrument genre of music games, “Wii Music” could be a bit of a let-down. Miyamoto’s latest work falls more along the lines of recent, nongamer-oriented titles like “Wii Fit” and “Wii Sports” than his… Read More »
